Roses are lovely in the garden and fragrant in addition to bouquets, but did you know that roses are also edible? All rose varieties contain Vitamin C, and rose hips are exceptionally high in this nutrient. Roses also have antioxidant properties.

While modern rose cultivars have been bred for their beauty and not their flavor, rose hips (the fruit of the rose plant) have a tart, lemony flavor that is perfect for:

  • Jams
  • Jellies
  • Syrups

Rose petals also have a delicate flavor that can be used in other recipes.

What Rose Petals Suit for Cooking

The best rose petals for cooking are those that have been freshly picked and are free of pesticides. You can also use edible dried rose petals, although they may not be as flavorful as fresh ones. Avoid eating rose petals from florists as they may have been treated with chemicals you don't want to ingest. Also, try to avoid the roses cut in the street or other urban places because they can absorb all the exhaust from the cars passing by. It can be dangerous for your health.

How to Prepare Rose Petals for Cooking

The best time to select wild roses or roses from your garden is in the morning.

  • Before the heat, select your flowers after the morning dew.
  • Cut the little white portion off the bottom of each petal before cooking with the flower. These components are bitter and may not be sufficient for the meal.
  • Thoroughly wash the rose petals and place them on a cloth to dry.

If your recipe requires fresh rose petals, take them out of the fridge and use them in 2 hours. Rose petals can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week to prevent them from drying out.

INTERESTING FACT! Rosehip is the fruit of a round, shiny bud-shaped rose. In the fall, after the petals have fallen, you can collect berries from the rose bush and rosehips. Rosehips can also be used in cooking, especially as an herbal remedy.

Rosehips are usually the sweetest when picked after the first frost. Commonly used dried rosehips contain vitamin C and can be infused to make rosehip tea. It can be added to jam or serve as dressings.

One of the simplest ways to use dried rose petals for cooking is to:

  • Grind them into a sweet or savory spice mix
  • Use them to make flavored sugar.

Do this by layering a 1:2 rose/sugar ratio in an airtight container and then sieving the petals after a couple of weeks.

Now that you know how to prepare the rose petals for cooking. Give these recipes a try and enjoy the delicious flavor of roses!
